Today's post concern about the alternate theory of Microsoft...i.e why it's every alternate OS fails!
You all might be thinking that Win 7 was a really succcess & after that Win 8 was also a great success because it sold 60 million copies(as par Microsoft data)!
Let me tell you that it's subscription that tells actually how many people are switching on to Win 8...which may be just 20, 30 or 40 million or any number...so you can take the Microsoft with a pintch of a salt!
Lets start from the historical OS released by the Microsoft!
Windows 3.0

Win 1.0, 2.0, 286/2.1 & 386/2.1 were released very early days of PC evolution. Widows 3.0 and 3.0a(with multimedia) were Microsoft first commercial succeess. Launched in year 1990, Win 3.0 was finally a rival of Apple made OSes. With a new GUI and proper support for Intel's spanking new 80286 & 80386 CPUs. Win 3.0 was preety good. However, it was not as successful it's next version.
At the end of the day it was an AVERAGE performer in the market!

The Win 3.1 needed at least 286 CPU & 1 Mb of ram. So this made upgrade to Win 3.1 utterly impossible & compel users to buy a new upgraded PC & thus popularity of PCsskyrocketed. It was seriously popular- selling over 1 million copies in just 2 months at that time!
At the end of the day it was an SUCCESS in the market!
Windows 95
Most people say it was very popular & successful in the market as it sold over 1 million copies in just 4 days....yes believe me in just 4 days!

Also Microsoft introduced it's famous Start Button in this version & advertised it with the song START ME UP from rolling stone!
Win 95 was benefited a lot from Win 3.1's commercial success. There was an extensive marketing of Win 95 spending around $300 million dollars (a huge amount at that time).
This is the reason why i rate it as AVERAGE.
Windows 98/ 98 SE
This upgradation of Win 95 was fantabolous!

People were really happy with their Win 98 PC & there seems to be absolute no reason to upgrade. I personally know a person who brought a PC in 2000 got ME preinstalled & he downgraded his system to 98 SE (pirated). Now you can imagine the popularity of 98 & the reason why i consider it to be GLOBAL SUCCESS!.... At the end of the day i would rate it POOR.
If ever there would be success story of OSes then this would top the list!

\You woudn't think drop shadow for icons could make such a huge difference, but they did! XP was worth upgrading your PC for...heck it was worth buying a new PC for, and many of us did, just to be able to run it in full glory. The start menu looks more impressive with new programs being highlighted, themes started poping up everywhere & desktop design comptetion was starteed!
Games look cool with DIirectX8.1 upgradable to DirectX9.0c!
The uptime for the OS was farely high & beleive me i would never dare to compete uptime with Linux Users or BSD but this OS gave me prety much confidence to try & compete!
I'll grade XP with Viral Success!

It was released in such a period where user were satisfied with their 5 years old XP PC & dont find any reason to upgrade for such a hefty OS.
It was prebundeled with DirectX 10 & all bells & whistels were nice to a gammer but they sound little to an average PC user.
It was complete FLOP.
Windows 7
Windows 7 was the combination of XP & Vista...light weighted as Xp & stylish as Vista...It seems Win 7 was the aim of coders when they were building Vista. It was more stablity, hardware was used better, the User Control Access(UAC) was less oa an irritation & more of pleasure...and yes boot time was also less. Virtualization was beeter & windows side bars were removed.

I'll grade win 7 as a Good OS.
Now our history lesson is over...coming over to the real point...Why Every alternate OS fails....See Win 95 was no doubt good but not perfect because it had lots & lots of bug!
It took almost 4 years for Microsoft to remove all those bugs & then finally came the Win 98....this was more stable & full of new experience...this made people purchase PCs & was the real start of PC Boom..
Talking about Win ME as some critics says was a Mistaken Edition...they hurried up for it....I would say engg. were busy making XP & in the midway to get publicity they released ME...
Then came the Win XP & the sales of PC was skyrocketed as the most crucial 5 years 2002 - 2006 were penetrated by XP.
Win Vista for launched in the year 2007 when most of the users were satisfied with their XP PC & found no reason to purchase a new PC....instead they throw in some RAM or install the fresh copy of XP..that will do the work!
Then Win 7 was launch by this time having a GPU & GBs of RAM was mandatory not only in PCs but also in laptops! This made Win 7 a real success,
Win 8 was launched & it is not accepted my the masses...stay tune for my next Post & find out the reasons why it was a major flop!
